Rien ne s’oppose à la nuit - concert at the Belgian Embassy in Japan - 29 and 30 October

RIEN NE S’OPPOSE À LA NUIT (NOTHING OPPOSES THE NIGHT) by David Achenberg, for viola, bass clarinet, piano, electronics and video is a film-concert that is both dreamlike and hypnotic. It juxtaposes two temporal perceptions of the same musical and visual material. One is extremely slow and drawn-out, potentially ‘experienced’ from inside a metro carriage (played by the acoustic instruments), whilst the other is greatly accelerated and compressed, ‘perceived’ when one passes a metro carriage travelling in the opposite direction (electronic processing). The film, shot in the Paris metro, accentuates the hypnotic nature of the experience.

This performance is very much part of the long and fruitful collaboration between the composer David Achenberg and the Erämaa Trio. It has already been performed to great acclaim in Belgium and several other European countries. These leading figures in Belgian contemporary music are delighted to be presenting it for the first time in Japan.
