Last May All of a Sudden (Soudain), the new movie by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, took the Cannes Film Festival by storm, earning its leading actresses Tao Okamoto and Virginie Efira the Best Actress Prize. The film also won over critics, offering a message of hope in dark times. As Variety put it, it is ‘a film that makes the world feel like a kinder place’. Japan has selected All of a Sudden (Soudain) as its official submission in the International Feature Film category for the 99th Academy Awards. The selection marks Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s second chance to compete in the category, following his Oscar win for Drive My Car just five years ago.
