Mr Maarten Willems received a M.S. Degree in Electrotechnical Engineering, a M.S. Degree in Artificial Intelligence and a MBA from the K.U.Leuven. After a career with high-tech companies, he co-founded Hypertrust, an internet service company, in 2000. In 2005, he joined imec as Market Intelligence group leader.  Since 2008, he has been Business Director for the Smart Electronics and Smart Applications units of imec focusing on business development of new partnerships in the fields of imaging, wireless/RF, life sciences, IoT, wearables and power electronics solutions.

He will give an update of the status of imec innovation platforms, highlight some of the partnerships with Japanese companies and provide some insights into additional opportunities towards the future.





GIGA (Interdisciplinary Cluster for Applied Genoproteomics) was established in 2007 and aims at gathering researchers, clinicians and private stakeholders to develop an ecosystem conducive to basic and applied research to patients’ benefit. The founding principles are: Interdisciplinarity and excellence; Quality of the exchanges between clinicians and researchers; Shared human and technical resources; Provision of Business areas for start-ups and spin offs and a biotech training centre.

Dr Jacques Piette was Professor of Virology, Immunology and Molecular Biology of the University of Liege from 1998 to 2016 and Director of GIGA-Research from 2007 to 2015. Since November 2016, he has become Honorary Director of GIGA-Research and Honorary Research Director of FRS-FNRS (the Fund for Scientific Research in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation).

He will provide an overview of the opportunities for Japanese companies from research to market linked to innovative ecosystems and strategic value chains with a focus on the biotechnologies and life sciences.

GIGA(応用ゲノプロテオミクス学際クラスター)は2007年に発足し、研究者、臨床医、民間のステークホルダーを集めることで、基礎及び応用研究を導くエコシステムを発展させることを目的としています。設立の原則は、学際性と卓越性、臨床医と研究者の間の交流、 人材と技術リソースの共有、 スタートアップ、スピンオフ企業のためのビジネスエリアの提供、そして、バイオテクノロジーのトレーニングセンターです。




Innoviris is the Brussels Institute for scientific research and innovation. Its mission is to support and stimulate research, development and innovation in and for Brussels through the funding of innovative projects by companies, research organisations and the non-commercial sector.

Dr Magali Verdonck has been the Deputy Director General of Innoviris since 2013. She holds a PhD in economics from the Université Catholique de Louvain and has pursued an accomplished career in government, holding various administrative positions in government and charitable bodies. She has also been a Professor at Saint-Louis University, Brussels.

She will give an overview of the research & innovation landscape and policy in the Brussels-Capital Region and the different support actions for research institutions and companies on collaborative research & innovation projects.
